How does the future look for your premature or dysmature foal?
What happens next, after the vet has given the all clear for your new premature or dysmature foal? Is there anything to look out for in the months and years ahead? It’s a question asked by many owners and breeders.
Naturally, the initial focus is on helping the foal grow stronger. However, that’s just the first chapter in a life that may be affected by later health and soundness issues.
Even dysmature foals that are born weak without needing the vet can be affected.
Their birth status may lead to:
- Long-term soundness concerns
- Growth and conformation issues
- Different nutritional needs
- Behavioral and training concerns
Understanding these differences is important if you wish to give your foal – or weanling or young horse that was under-developed at birth – the best possible chance of a healthy, productive life.
Now guidance is available in this new handbook, Managing the Miracle Foal. Based in my PhD research and professional observations, it introduces and explains the challenges at hand. Next, it gives simple suggestions for achieving positive outcomes.
You can learn more about the book and the research here. I’m gradually adding more resources, plus blog posts in New and Views. There’s also a private Facebook group where I’ll be sharing relevant news.
I hope you find it both helpful and interesting!
